NSE Stock market holidays in India 2023: Equity trading will be closed for up to three days in April, with no break in July.

The NSE is one of India’s largest and most well-known stock exchanges. The NSE is currently the world’s tenth-largest stock exchange, with a market capitalization of more than US$ 3.4 trillion.

All year round, the NSE maintains effective and seamless trading operations. 

On weekdays, it is open for trade from 9.15 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. (regular session), providing a 6 hour, 15 minute trading period.  The trading holidays are both Saturdays and Sundays. There is no trading in the equity sector, equity derivatives segment, or SLB segment over these NSE vacations.

The largest stock exchange in the country is Mumbai’s NSE (National Stock Exchange), which is India’s principal stock market. The NSE is operational from Monday to Friday, although it is closed on weekends and federal holidays.

NSE Stock Market Holidays in India 2023 – Equities

NSE Stock market holidays in India 2023: The Indian stock market ushered in the new year of 2023 after experiencing a roller-coaster year in 2022. Stock market holidays for the year 2023 have already been published and shared on Indian bourses. According to the schedule of stock market holidays 2023, trading in stocks will be remain closed on 15 days, as compared to the 13 days that NSE and BSE were shut down in 2022. As a result, this year’s secondary market in India will see two more trading holidays.

There will only be one stock market holiday in January 2023, compared to two in 2022, but there won’t be any trade holidays in February. Trading at the NSE will remain halted on January 26 in observance of Republic Day across the country.  

After Republic Day, the next stock market holiday will occur in March. Equity, equity derivatives, and SLB segment trading will all be suspended on Tuesday, March 7.

As there will be three trading holidays in April 2023, the month of April will see the most stock market holidays. Equity trading will be suspended on April 4, 2023 in observance of Mahavir Jayanti. There will also be two further stock market holidays in April 2023 on April 7, 2023 (Good Friday), and April 14, 2023. (Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti).

In the months of May and June 20223, one stock market holiday has been set. NSE trading will be shut down on May 1 in observance of Maharashtra Day, while trading in the equity, equity derivative, and SLB segments will be shut down on June 28 in observance of Bakri Id.

While one holiday will fall in each of August and September 2023, there is no stock market holiday announced for the month of July 2023. Equity trading in India will be suspended on August 15, 2023, in observance of Independence Day, while NSE trading will be suspended on September 19, 2023, in observance of Ganesh Chaturthi.

Two stock market holidays have been set for October and November. Two stock market holidays occur in October 2023: Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (2nd October) and Dussehra (24th October).

There are two stock market holidays in October 2023: Gurunanak Jayanti (November 14)) and Diwali Balipratipada (November 27). The final trading day off in 2022 will be on December 25, in observance of Christmas.

As a result, there won’t be any stock market holidays in the months of February or July in 2023, but there could be up to three in the month of April. March, October, and November all have two stock market holidays, however, January (26th, Republic Day), May (1st, Maharashtra Day), June (28th, Bakri Id), August (15th, Independence Day), September (19th, Ganesh Chaturthi), and December (25th, Christmas) only have one trading holiday each.

The following holidays fall on Saturday or Sunday:

On November 12, 2023, Muhurat Trading will take place. The muhurat trading times will be announced later.

Muhurat Trading

On Diwali, one of the most important festivals in India, trading takes place for an entire hour, making it an auspicious time to trade on the stock market. On November 12, 2023, Muhurat Trading will take place this year.

NSE Trading Schedule

1. Pre-open Timing for Trading Stocks

The pre-open session lasts for 15 minutes between 9:00 and 9:15 in the morning. The pre-open session consists of the order gathering and order matching phases. The range of prices that apply must correspond to the typical market.

2. Regular Trading Hours for Trading Stocks

Trading hours are typically from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The daily trading session at the NSE lasts six hours and fifteen minutes without a break for lunch. There is no availability for pre-market or after-hours trading.

3. Closing session

The Closing Session takes place from 3:40 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

4. Block Deal Session Timings

Session I: The first block deal session is from 8:45 to 9:00 in the morning.

Session II: From 02:05 until 02:20 PM, the second session of the block deal window is open.
